September Sing #12

Hello, avid reader, tis I, the crazy gig quest hobbit!
I’m kind of right in the middle of it all right now. The last few gigs have been eventful, fun, busy. Tonight’s gig above.

Saturday was at the Marine in Milford-On-Sea. Really beautiful venue, really great music, really great crowd. Annie, Cardigan Joe, Leighton, Big Daddy G were all fab to be with. Dave and a young guy I remember as Danny were really brilliant on the mic. BDG had a new song about Annie which was really great. A lovely night and Annie and Leighton renamed September Sing as ‘The Quest’.

Sunday at the Nelson was also great. Same guys and gals as the night before. I was racing back at breakneck speed from London to get to the gig in time and was rather frazzled when I arrived. However, it’s one of the best renditions of the song Annie and her Mum now call the George Harrison one that I’ve done. You can really feel when you and the crowd are feeling a song and we all felt it that night.

Monday was similar at Camden. I did I Want You Bad at Tim’s request and Pandora and everyone seemed just a little enthralled, which is such a wonderful feeling. I felt warmly nostalgic there that night and those three gigs were a high point of this whole thing. I think I get a nostalgia from Camden when the weather gets colder because that’s when I first played there so I could feel that ‘just like the first time’ feeling. Actually it’s almost exactly a year ago that i first played there. Also got lots of very nice comments from people who seemed to love the set and got to chat to Mark, who played the most incredible, powerful set, about gigging and the perils and highs and also quickly chatted to some of the other people playing. And got to see one half of Team Graeme again which was wonderful. Hopefully see them both next Monday.

And last night I was at O’Neill’s. Si Genaro quotes for this week, ‘be gentle with Sarge, he’s going through the change’ and a personal favourite of mine: ‘prawnography’. I was lucky enough to be accompanied by Ant, Tom and Leo on the last song and there’s a little bit of video of us together which I’ll put somewhere soon.

September Sing #9

So I did something I am disappointed with myself for…I didn’t make it for a gig. I’m not proud, but I had a legitimate excuse which was pure, naked exhaustion. 7.30am mornings built up to convince me it was impossible to do four gigs in a working week. I really hope I don’t miss any more.

O’ Neill’s was fun, and populated by half of Bournemouth it seemed. Si Genaro quote of the week, ‘no friends in the music business, only acquaintances.’

What was really great was when a lady called Helen, who really must be in her 70s at least, got up and sang Summertime and Crazy and other jazz standards acappella. She was definitely the star of the night.

So no Anvil on Wednesday, but I played at The Dancing Jug again tonight and I nailed it, I mean I REALLY nailed it. I don’t know how good I was or wasn’t but it felt good. I was excited to be there, Ant’s one of the nicest guys around the music venues, and pretty much all I tried to do worked. Felt buzzy afterwards. Got three drunk girls and a fab blues guitarist dancing at one point. And enjoyed lots of other music, including Plug-In Dave of whom perhaps a photo soon!

Set Lists:

O’ Neill’s – 11th September 2012

Without Words

Pandora

Somebody To Love

Dancing Jug – 13th September 2012

September Sing #5

So, almost done 5 gigs in 5 days. It’s been a lot of fun already. Sunday was really wonderful at the Nelson, so warmly welcomed back, might take Annie up on a kazoo solo sometime. Monday at Camden, the audience were hushed and respectful and my lot turned up half an hour after I’d played – doh! Great to see them though. Tuesday at O’Neill’s was full of very interesting people, very interesting music (and the girl with the mask!) and I had a great time, joking about being the night shift (or maybe the headliner, depending on which way you look at it) and getting a great reception. Si Genaro said something about all the performers just turning up and playing for free because they love what they do and it is true, and I feel it too, going out against all nerves, misgivings, weather, exhaustedness and doing these gigs just to say I’ve done it. It’s great. And Chaplin’s in Boscombe last night, playing to a very few people and then dodging the drinkers until a frankly fantastic top-hatted, nose-ringed, tattooed and dreadlocked four-piece skiffle band jiggled the place silly!

So Dancing Jug tonight and first beardy pics above. Will let you know how it goes.

Sonics and Wheel Spins

Played at O’Neill’s tonight in Bournemouth for the first time. It was good. There was quite an interesting variety of musicians there. I did the same set as at Camden and it seemed to go down well. I liked Pete’s Sonics, Si Genaro’s harmonica was as legendary as ever, some great beatboxing and Sarge’s enigmatic silence was very amusing.

There were beautiful people aplenty, but the most beautiful were Natalie, Vicky, Rachel, Ben, John and Mr and Mrs The Woo and partners for taking the time to come and support the Coo.

Then we span the wheels around Bournemouth a bit, but don’t tell anyone!

Video, photos, set list to follow soon.
