Conformity or creativity?

Tuesday evening and I find myself in the enviable position of making music again, or to be specific, mixing music I have already made, or to be more specific, spending an evening with my good friend the musical genius while he makes what is already promising sound flimming stupendous!

I got the feeling I often get when making or mixing music, that I was connecting the universe’s dots. Such excitement, such achievement. We started work on Use Me from Weapon of Love. Not quite at the finishing line yet but it sounds so sweet already.

And I could be sitting in an office right now, making money and slowly rotting. And instead I am breathing outside air, adding to the tapestry, living.

Conformity or creativity?

I’ll take creativity please.

Can I just point out that if you have had the good taste to download Weapon of Love already, I will happily send you a free copy of the fully finished and mixed version as well as some natty artwork and wallpapers to go with the audio loveliness.

Paid by those who learn by our mistakes

Sang last night…and Tuesday night.

In fact every spare moment I have had in the last nine-ish months has been used to record or sing or guitar or harmonise or mix or tweak, or do the artwork, which is proving very difficult to nail!

Did the main vocals on Tuesday for ‘Moments’ and the harmonies last night. The main vocals were hard work but they were nothing compared to the harmonies last night. Maybe it’s the winter weather but I feel like hibernating rather than singing, especially after a seven and a half hour working day, but I somehow managed to get enough energy to start last night and subsequently got focussed and determined to finish before the night was out, which I did.

Lots of mixing to do now. And still a few guitar parts to sort.

And as for the artwork…EEEEK!

The riff from hell

I’ve been working on the recording of Umbrella Head this week, one of our most popular songs. The riff has been recorded about five different ways – I just couldn’t get the sound I wanted. Started with some kind of phasery sound and realised it was too much, too wavery, not direct enough for the song, so proceeded to throw loads of distortion and overdrive and fuzz in and then took all that off and added a bit of reverb. Sounds right now. Just lots of tweaking to do and the singing needs to be redone. I don’t mind little mistakes in the singing (gives it character) but the overall feel has to be just right. Don’t know when I recorded the vox that are on there at the moment but they just don’t sound quite 100%. So incredibly subtle, no one else would question it I’m sure but there’s just a feeling in there that I could sing them with a little more confidence and attack, maybe.

Keep Going…

Paused in the middle of mixing the recent recordings as I suddenly had a feeling for how I wanted the website to update and had an urge to get it done. Not finished by any means yet but seriously coming along, and looking, if I do say so myself, rather spiffing! Have a look:
