You gotta spend some time with me

Saw Death Cab For Cutie last week, at last.

I’ve waited for a while to see them and the terminology that seems appropriate here is ‘rockage’.

Benjamin Gibbard seemed possessed with a spirit of crazy energy that wasn’t for one second going to waver.

Their music is just magnificent.

Well, I’m listening to The Cure and have realised that I could probably listen to a Cure song every day for the rest of what is hopefully a long life. Ok, so I might have to listen to certain songs for two days in a row, like Lullaby (the Disintegration version, NOT the Greatest Hits version), or Harold And Joe, or The Caterpillar, or The Exploding Boy, or Push, or Inbetween Days, or Just Like Heaven, or I Don’t Know What’s Going On, or… I think you get the idea. I love them. If I met them I might hate them – I doubt it – but I love them for giving me such pleasure (baby!)

I met up with my best friend today. It was sunny, crisply cold, we had a lovely time and I took a photo of a flower which I may post sometime because it’s pretty.

I’ve finished D-Songs, but then you knew that, and there’s lots of ‘stuff’ to come soon for you to look at, read, listen to, etc. so please PLEASE stay tuned.

I’ve been thinking about a girl I know and I want her bad! I want her body, I want her soul, her sense of wonder, I want her standing in front of me so that she makes me laugh with a really clever or silly observation and I’m starting a song called ‘I Want You Bad’, inspired by wanting her bad, which I shall put somewhere for you to hear because it’s kind of got the potential to be rather sweet.

I’m about to eat two egg custard tarts…mmmmm…nom nom nom!

And Ben Gibbard, lead singer of Death Cab For Cutie, is running a marathon for charity. And although it’s rather last minute of me, here’s a link:

The season’s change was a conduit

I was listening to old songs of ours last night, digging out dusty CDs and reminiscing and it lightly shocked me that I’ve recorded so much stuff and it all has a certain quality. None of it mixed properly or professionally but alive and quirky and rather lovely if I do say so. I might put the odd track up somewhere. Need to listen again.

You know when you discover a band and realise you really like them? It’s a great feeling isn’t it. But oftentimes you discover them halfway down the line. Someone played Plans by Death Cab For Cutie and I just knew throughout the first play that there was something going on. I have played that album many, many times since then. But I think I started to see them as one of my favourite bands when I heard The New Year, first track on Transatlanticism. It has a quality that I want to capture for one of our tracks – an urgency coupled with an irresistible hook and short enough that you mourn its passing while it’s still playing. I struggled with Transatlanticism for a while, it’s a case where my brother’s philosophy about albums was spot on – really good albums take ages for you to get into, not the first listen, not the fifth listen, but eventually it gets there and you realise it’s one of the best things you’ve ever heard. Given the luxury of hindsight I would have gone in order and bought the albums chronologically. I’m about to chase down their early albums and get The Open Door ep. I love so much about their music, the sound, the lyrics, but it’s the feeling that the music gives me that is the most special thing – it’s not easy to get that feeling into music.

Here’s a great video accompanying a great song by the band Hope and Social used to be (I still want to remix DWYM, guys!):

And here’s a touching short film…about a plastic bag:

Death Cab For Cutie

I love Death Cab For Cutie – I just love them! They are so groovy, their lyrics hit you in the stomach, heart and head simultaneously, I love his delicate voice, I love their tunes – from Little Bribes: “Pretend every slot machine is a robot amputee waving hello the people stare into their eyes and they feed them little bribes and then they go”. They don’t seem to be huge and I don’t understand why.
