It’s always the people – September Sing #17

So, this is the first chance I’ve had to bring up to date the antics of my month of gigs. I believe I did a couple of songs at the Nelson on the 23rd and I believe they went very well. Camden the next night, however, was manic. When I went into Somebody To Love, I kind of had to scream to be heard over everyone else. Lots of clapping along and singing and it was a slight struggle to stay ahead of it all. Fun though. The Thomas Tripp was different altogether the next night. I was on last, the night shift again and very few people there to see what I thought was one of the defining performances of the whole month. Not to mention being accompanied by Ben and Ben in the sweetest way. I think Kazoo Ben was very taken as I got a kiss and a hug afterwards but percussion Ben was amazing too – he created quite some magic considering he only had a tambourine. The guy on the sound desk made everything sound sweet for me . Hope it sounded as good going out. Secret Musician’s Club on Wednesday 26th was sweet too. I opened with three songs and did another three later after the noise curfew and they all sounded pretty sweet to me. It was quite special actually as, when I did the acoustic ones, everyone circled their chairs around me, a bit like a campfire singsong. There were some incredible musicians there that night as well. Dancing Jug on Thursday 27th seemed on the verge of a gig too far. I was exhausted by that point but gave it what I had. Unfortunately I didn’t have the power for Roxanne in the key I decided to sing it, or the memory for the Beatles song chords either but it went ok apart from that. Given a break of a couple of days I was feeling a little more with it for the Nelson again for the Sunday and was extremely pleased with my performance, even if all the very accomplished performers had to battle against the Ryder Cup (boo to golf – right there with you Leighton). Monday 1st October at Camden was not quite the rousing finish I had hoped for but it went ok. Lovely to see John, Tim and chat with Team G afterwards. From the Thomas Tripp onwards, I started to do Hello Sensitive again after a long break and it got the reactions it always had, at the Thomas Tripp from the sound guy and especially Camden with one guy who was watching.

Coming up, full September Sing setlists and a survivor’s guide to a month of gigs.

Klick Klack a Lacking

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy….

A weird thing happened to me on Wednesday.

I heard a sound that I hadn’t heard in ages and ages and realised how much I had missed it when I heard it. But I had forgotten the sound, forgotten even that there was a sound like it. So I wasn’t aware that I had been missing it.

That sound was the keys of a typewriter being hit. I couldn’t stop klacking away, it was great.

Christmas Camden Madness

We had a wild time on Monday at Camden. It was packed full of people, there was a heckler who got out-heckled and eventually left us to it, loads of great music, and from a personal point of view a fantastic moment where I only had to half sing Somebody To Love as all the lovely people there were more than willing to sing along throughout and, thanks to John being as marvellous as ever, you can watch it here:

Somebody To Love

as well as my version of The Power Of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood:

The Power Of Love

And a slightly clearer version of I Want You Bad:

I Want You Bad

Enjoy!

Thanks to John, Lucy, Andy, Charlotte, James, Nick, Justice and Sarah for coming and supporting. And thanks to everyone at Camden for giving me lots of high points throughout 2011.

🙂

Singing like a bat out of Cromer

Great night at Camden, a chap called Tom (I think – Don?) did a frankly brilliant version of The Banana Boat Song which everyone went crazy for and then did another song due to everyone shouting for more. Band called Gekko were also brilliant and, as always, it was a lovely night and then I proceeded to stay up till 2am writing a song (or putting music to one at least).

iamaweaponoflove…}

Some time back, in the dark recesses of 2009, I started working on a track called “My Machine Is Broken”. I was determined to ‘do a Kraftwerk’. I got about halfway through the song and stopped as D-Songs took over.

Sometime after that, I made two pieces of music which I submitted for a soundtrack. They weren’t used.

In May 2011, I went on holiday to Australia. While I was there I did some programming in my spare time. Once I had returned, I had finished the programming for Weapon, Use Me, Tranquillizer, In The City At Night, We Ran, In The Rain and Weapon Of Love.

I spent the next few months singing on the Oz tracks, programming and singing on No Connection and Arrow, and adding the latter half of My Machine Is Broken.

I took the two unused soundtrack pieces and added them to the album, renaming them “Steel Gives Tully Over To The Darkness” and “Hope It’s Raining When I Get Home”.

A friend kindly contributed some sweet vocals to We Ran.

And sometime in July I finished Weapon Of Love, a delightful confection of electro pop heaven.

Then I had a fab time taking silly photos with Wendy Buckley and used them to make artwork and wallpaper for the album.

And today you can download the album, along with the artwork:

On top of all of that, I’m playing a couple of tunes (hopefully more) at Camden Bar in Ashley Cross next Monday (5th September) sometime after 7pm. It would be great to see you there:
