Boom!

Man! It all happens! Another fun night at the Thomas Tripp and after speaking to Leighton and Annie realised we’re all full of the same kinds of ideas and it’s really exciting.

The choices you make, the snowballs, the beauty of it all, eh? Ah, sometimes life is sweet!

Give it to me, I know it’s only the truth…

So, Camden again. A first – no covers, I only played my songs, including a new one. It went well. There were again awesome musicians all over the place – Drew, Dan (I think) and Gehko were a few of them.

People seemed to like the songs so that’s good.
I meant to take photos but forgot to take a camera with me.

Pieces Of Me

And on Saturday night, I saw Hope & Social play at the Winchester. It’s only the third time I’ve seen them live but it was easily as enjoyable as the others. They are a rare breed of band in that they seem to see fun and banter as an integral part of their live act and it makes for a consistently fantastic evening out. I had the best intentions of getting much more involved in their day trips and art-making and I did get as far as remixing one of their tracks but it was unsatisfactory. I shall go back to it at some point and have another go. But despite only crossing paths briefly, they remain very special to me and I urge you to see them live at least twice. Find me another band who will order their trumpet player to run, mid-song, to the corner shop for chocolate, alcohol and, ahem, adult literature to see if he can make it back before the song ends, whilst getting a member of the audience to play fill-in guitar (sorry, Si Genaro, I dropped you in it there, but you played a blinder!). An inspiring and uplifting gig, as wonderfully vibrant as the Crypt and Glastonbury ones. Simon, the lovely chap with the main vocal and usherette duties, told me that they might be returning this way. If they are I urge you to make an effort to see them.

Wouldn’t it be good…

On Monday the 12th of November I played Camden and it was delightful. Had a very good time with John and Tim, silly, fun, fab. Uncharacteristically, I messed up a good half a dozen chords this Monday during Life On Mars? but did the first song perfectly. Not impressed. Won’t happen again!

Life On Mars?

I feel incredibly conscious of the fact that I haven’t got any music to get out there. There are a number of constraints of which I can do nothing. Time is getting eaten like an apple. I can’t pay for studio time – I simply can’t afford it. My energy levels are non-existent. But on the plus side, new songs are coming thick and fast. I did record one which I was pleased with, may put it up soon.

I also have an idea for another project but it would have to rely on the goodwill of a studio to give us their time in return for the biggest shout out I could possibly give for their services to be used by everyone. Anyone know of anyone who is desperate to lend a studio for the good of the ears of the people? Let me know.

And finally, I have new music coming, I conservatively estimate it may be shiny, new, finished and listenable by January but I’ll keep you posted.
Whoops, and finally finally, I have at last found a favourite film of the year, and so have my friends I saw it with: Ruby Sparks!

Woody’s Roundup

I did four very different gigs post-September Sing. The Dancing Jug on the 25th was cool, I did a Bowie classic for the first time and it went down very well with one of the chaps in there. I could feel that my energy levels had sapped though. Strange how quickly you get out of the routine.

I did the Thomas Tripp in Christchurch on the following Tuesday and as with the previous visit there, there was a phenomenal atmosphere. It always sounds great, the audience, although initially quiet, were very appreciative and I got another kiss from Ben!

Thursday was The Crooked Book in Boscombe. I’d wanted to play here for about 6 months and it had the most amazing atmosphere. It was wonderful. The audience were silent which made it extremely charged and I nervously tried to crack a previously thought-up ‘funny’ between songs which absolutely died – note to self – no more funnies!

And then a Saturday at The Dancing Jug. An hour of craziness with heckling, guest vocalists, Ant doing his amazing thing, acrobatic barmaids, Dave there for very much appreciated support along with my very special rent-a-fanclub too turning up. I sounded like Barry White when I woke the next day but it was well worth it!

There’s more tomorrow night at Camden. Come along!

This guitar has seconds to live – September Sing #13

Bourne Beat Hotel on Wednesday, an amazing, almost tense atmosphere in the most incredible room packed full of gig posters of every shape and style of music on every available space on the walls. Secret Musician’s Club indeed. My guitar decided it didn’t want to play without putting up a fight against its battery and any lead attached to it but I eventually got a sound out of it.

Thursday was at The Dancing Jug and an audience of the barman and a very drunk girl. The barman had a stab at Wonderwall when I played it for him and the girl tried to steal the mic on several occasions. I’m not sure she knew what she wanted to do with it though. A fantastic night’s music, however, with the Bluesmen Three on scorching form, Ant the perfect host as always, and I allowed to do two sets. Nice jam with blues Pete and Ant on the last song too.
